Students are more than half way through the week celebrating Martin Luther King Day at Jones Middle School. As stated in our previous post, Jones Middle School has partnered with the Upper Arlington Library to educate and celebrate Martin Luther King. | WEDNESDAY: “Our ultimate end must be the creation of the beloved community.” April 15, 1960, in Raleigh, North CarolinaMartin Luther King, Jr. had a vision for a community in which everyone is cared for, where there is no poverty, hunger, and hate. He believed in creating communities based on forgiveness, friendship, and human dignity. And he believed that all people are interconnected in a world-wide community. |
| THURSDAY: “The time is always right to do right.” 6/1965, Oberlin, OH
Martin Luther King, Jr. thought that the best way to make change was to protest peacefully by refusing to follow rules that were unfair. For example, when restaurants in the South were racially segregated and refused to serve Black customers, King sat at a lunch counter with other Black protestors, ordered lunch, and sat quietly waiting for their food—food that was never going to come—in order to bring attention to the unfairness. He was arrested and sent to jail for not following that unfair rule. King believed that there were many ways to make change, big and small. He said, “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” He also said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” Martin Luther King, Jr. did great things with the help of thousands of others. He helped bring about the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Each of these bills helped African Americans access civil rights across the country. |
